What can people find out from an IP adress?

How much information can people find out from an IP adress? and what exactly can they find out?
Is one supposed to keep their IP hidden ?
There must be some software to prevent your IP to be seen by others while you are online.

walk over to the computer and pull out the network cable and dont use the internet

that's to be 200% sure they cant see you

Your answer has two parts

No we cant find out exactly where you live, at best a suburb, but my ip address puts me in sydney.. try it yourself with the windows tracert command in a command prompt..
C:\ tracert www.google.com

tracert = trace route
what we can do is another answer all together. chances are millions of folk (me included)out there can enumerate every single peice of information about your system, OS, ports open, services running, firewalls, and then go about looking for a weakness..
there are 65,000 plus ports on your system the way a hacker gets in is looking for a listening service on one of your ports. you will have a few open, exploiting a service is academic really, then they have as much control over your system as you do sitting infront of it.
Unfortunately the hackers always have the edge as most people are never fully up to date or have mis-configured something.
