People living in the countryside have green stuff to look at everywhere, so it doesn't matter much if their hedge goes bald every winter. For us townies, our hedge could easily be most of the natural beauty we have nearby and while a leafless plant certainly isn't ugly, it can't really beat a splash of colour in a bleak, urban midwinter.
