I want to paint my kitchen cupboards

Hi
I'm a bit of a newbie at painting and need a bit of advice about whether painting my timber kitchen cupboards is an option to refresh my kitchen. We have a pretty good kitchen but outdated timber look and i'd like to paint the doors instead of replace them. Any advice from you painting experts on what paint to use? How much work i'm in for? etc.
